Perhaps because so many items we think of a vegetables are actually fruits.  It's easier to join them than to deal with the incorrect popular notion that tomatoes, peppers, avocados, and eggplants are vegetables.  Usually we think of the savory plants as vegetables and the sweet ones as fruits but that's not the biological distinction.</description>

I guess sometimes things need to be "dumbed down" for general consumption.  "Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day" is easier to remember than "Eat three vegetables and two fruits."
